Matatour 2007 - chilliger carribean Törn

Wie schon angekündigt, waren wir von 27.1.2007 bis 11.2.2007 auf einem Yacht-Törn in der Karibik. Wir sind in Martinique mit einem Katamaran gestartet, dann mit vielen Stops in den Süden und zurück. Jeden Tag Sonne, Palmen, Segeln, viel Regen und karibisches Essen.

Die Tour wurde von Matthias organisiert, wie schon der Törn vor zwei Jahren, die Matatour 2005. Sonst waren noch seine Freundin Rosi, Christoph, Bettina, Heike und Michael mit. Skipper war Christian von den Freaks on Board, und sein guter Freund Franz ist als Co-Skipper mitgekommen. Insgesamt waren wir zehn Leute, das ist schon recht viel, und zehn Leute haben zwanzig Meinungen. Manchmal hatten wir endlose Diskussionen über Details, aber da sich die meisten untereinander kannten und alle recht tolerant waren, war die Stimmung an Bord gut. Die Cuba Libre Cocktails von "Fossy" (Franz) haben dann auch nachgeholfen, das wir uns wohl gefühlt haben.

Das Boot war eine Bahia 46, ein Katamaran. Gemietet haben wir über Trend Travel Yachting, das hat auch ganz gut geklappt (Details kenn ich nicht, hat netterweise alles Matthias und Christian gecheckt - DANKE!). Das Boot ist sehr groß, in beiden Rümpfen sind insgesamt vier Kabinen, jede hat ein eigenes Badezimmer. Vorn im Bug sind nochmal zwei kleine Kabinen, dazwischen noch ein Gang in dem noch ein wenig Platz ist. Zwischen den Rümpfen ist bei so einem Kat viel Platz für einen großen Salon, hinten ein großes Cockpit (das ist der Teil vom Boot wo man draussen sitzt, segelt und trinkt), vorne ist ein Netz gespannt. Überall gibts einen Meter Platz, um Klappstühle aufzubauen oder sich in die Sonne zu legen. Ein Unterschied von Kat und einrümpfiger Yacht ist auch, das der Kat bei Wind in alle Richtungen wackelt, währen ein Einrumpfer nur nach vorn und zurück pendelt, aber vom Segel konstant schief gehalten wird.

Schlecht kann einem überall werden, und ein paar Leuten von uns ist es zeitweise sehr übel gegangen, ein paar Tage waren wir Seekrank und haben die Fische mit unserem Frühstück gefüttert. Tip: falls ihr "Anti-Seekrank Kleber für hinter die Ohren kleben" habt, verwendet sie von Anfang an. Und kein fettiges Frühstück Essen (Eier und so) sonder eher ein trocken Brot knabbern, das lenkt auch während dem Schaukeln ab. Die Meinung über "Katamaran gegen Einrumpfer" gingen auseinander, der Kat ist aber in der Karibik klar im Vorteil, mit dem niegrigeren Tiefgang (insgesamt etwa 1 meter glaub ich) kommt man viel näher an den Strand beim Ankern.

Kurzer Exkurs über Land und Leute: Martinique, wo wir gelandet sind, ist französisch. Klar, war ja mal Kolonie, denkst du jetzt vielleicht, aber - es ist Teil Frankreichs, Teil der EU. Französische Autobahnen auf Martinique, der Euro, alle sprechen Französisch, Autos nur Citröen, Peugeut und Renault, mit entsprechend europäischen Nummerntafeln, alles unter Palmen. Richtig nett. Auf Martinique und den anderen Inseln (St Vincent, St Lucia, Mayreau, Union) wars überwiegend sauber und nett. Wir haben viele Kinder in Schuluniformen gesehen, selbst Familien in Wellblechhütten schicken die Kinder in die Schule. Auf Canouan gabs keinen Tourismus und die knorrigen Dorfkneipen waren nicht so nach unserem Geschmack, wir haben uns dann in den edlen Strandklub mit Securities zurückgezogen und Cocktails getrunken. Beim Einkaufen kann man mit den Leuten verhandeln, und es bleibt alles locker (nicht wie bei Türkischen oder Ägyptischen Markthändlern, wo es, vor allem für Frauen, schon sehr nervig zugeht (kein Vorurteil, selbst wiederholt erlebt)). Egal wo man mit der Yacht hinfährt, sobald man sich einer Insel oder Ankerplatz nähert, kommt ein Händler und will einem Früchte, Fisch, einen Ankerplatz oder sonstwas verkaufen. Fragt man nach Eisblöcken beim Fischhändler, kann der das dann auch auftreiben : "no problem, how much you need, I will get it for you". Insofern braucht man keine Sorgen haben - "no worry", irgendwas geht immer. Christian und Fossy wurden auf ihrem letzten Trip an Bord ausgeraubt, das war nicht sehr angenehm, ist uns diesmal glücklicherweise nicht passiert.

Wie sind die Touristen? Geile Leute. Da wo wir hingefahren sind, kommen eigentlich nur Yachting-Touristen hin. Etwa auf der Insel Mustique, die ein paar Supperreichen gehört. Dort, in Basil's Bar trifft man dann nur nette Leute um die 40, oder älter, die mit Freunden gemütlich abhängen. Die Leute sind überschaubar, insgesamt sind ein paar hundert Yachten unterwegs, und man trifft die gleichen Crews immer wieder. Die Österreicher die neben uns in Martinique in ihr Boot einschifften, trafen wir auf zwei Inseln und wieder am Rückflug. Ein paar Franzosen trafen wir bei den deux Pitons von St Vincent, denen haben wir Mozartkugeln und gegrilltes ausgegeben, sie uns einen Drink namens "Plutonium" (von einem Typ namens Pluto), die ganze Runde trafen wir wieder im Flugzeug, beim einchecken. Ich mit meinem schlechten Personengedächtnis hatte Probleme sie wiederzuerkennen, als mich einige 40jährige Französinnen am Flughafen anlächelten, aber bald viel das Wort "Plutonium" und alles war klar.

Die Yacht-Leute haben "Class", etwa M, ein Anwalt aus London, der mit seiner Freundin I aus der Tschechei unterwegs war. Sie kamen gerade von einer Party der Anwaltskanzlei am Strand von Tobago (nochmal: es gibt eine Anwaltskanzlei die auf Firmenkosten 70 Leute in die Karibik zu einer Party fliegt). Ich lernte sie in der Warteschlange am Klo von Basils Bar auf Mustique kennen, trank später mit ihnen Cocktails, und ein paar Tage später waren sie dann auch in der Cocktailbar auf Mayreau.... Sehr kultivierte Leute, die perfekt Smalltalk machen können, hübsch gepflegt und so. Richtig angenehm. Ein paar "Kampftrinker" Yachten gibt es auch, aber die meisten Crews sind reiche Familien mit Kindern und so. Alles in allem "classy people", "beautiful people", gute Gesellschaft.

Eine kurze Geschichte zum Alltag: Einmal wollten wir auf den Tobago Keys Hummer kaufen ("Lobster")... während wir, wie üblich, die Preisverhandlungen am Ankerplatz führten, also am Wasser zwischen zwei Booten, sagte der nette Fischer im Boot recht wirsch: "Jump on Board, Jump on Board". Ich dachte, ich soll sein Boot von ihm aus bei uns festmachen, sprang an Bord, er gibt gas und ist weg. Mit mir. Zuerst mal Ungewissheit, was jetzt passiert, aber dann fuhr er zu seinen Lobstern und wir kamen ins Geschäft, für den Preis den wir im Kopf hatten (300EC, etwa 100€) bekamen wir vier Lobster, nicht superviel für 10 personen, aber ok. Ich immer noch mit ihm am Boot, er fährt auf irgendeine Insel ums Eck, und fängt den Lobster zum Grillen an. Dort war dann alles wieder roger - weil - sechs Deutsche dort ankern und auf der Insel gerade Schnaps trinken, und mich einladen. Perfekt, ich trinke Schnaps und der Fischer grillt mit seinem Freund die Lobster. Die Deutschen erzählen, dass sie vor drei Stunden den Atlantik überquert haben, gerade angekommen sind und sich hier gerade getroffen haben. Es waren zwei Schiffe, sie hatten sich das letzte Mal vor Monaten auf La Gomera (jaja, dort gibts übrigens noch Hippies) gesehen. Grund genug zum trinken. Alles in allem war ich kurz später wieder an Bord und wir hatten Lobster zu essen, und ich wußte viel über so eine Atlantiküberquerung. Hatte ich keine Kamera dabei, no worry.

Von den Photos gibts diesmal unendlich viel mehr, Ingrid und ich haben über zweitausend geschossen, 354 haben wir auf flickr hochgeladen. Die neue Canon EOS 400d hat sich bewährt, das 27-135 IS USM objektiv war ok, nicht perfekt. 15-300mm mit Lichtstärke 1, 100 gramm gewicht und image stabilizer bleibt der übliche Traum. Trotzdem gute Fotos und ein paar videos, es kommt vielleicht noch multimedia nach. Die Fotos sind noch nicht annotiert und getaggt, das kommt irgendwann morgen/übermorgen ... no worry...

Unsere Tour ging insgesamt über folgende Stationen:

Martinique, Hafen Le Marin
St Lucia, Marigot Bay (Boje). Dort sind wir mit dem Surfbrett in den Edelklub gerudert, har har Pirates, am Seeweg habt ihr keine Security
29.1. Bequia (sprich: Beck-Way), in der Admiralty Bay. Dort haben wir in die Inselnation einklariert (= segelsprech für Einreisen) und gleich gebloggt, photos gemacht...
30.1. Mustique. Die "Mick Jagger Insel". Dort war gerade das legendäre Mustique Blues Festival, das von Dana Gillespie und Big Jay McNeely organisiert wird. Wir hatten einen Abend lang den Blues. Manchmal kommt Mick aus seiner Villa runter uns jammt mit, an dem Tag nicht. Es gibt photos. Das Blues Festival findet in Basils Bar statt.
31.1. Mayreau. Wahnsinns Bucht zum Ankern, nur eine Bar und Boote.
2.2. Runter nach Union Island, Wasser bunkern (die Mädels haben zuviel geduscht), dann Mopion und Petit St Vincent, wo wir ankerten und einen James Bond film drehten. Das bot sich dan, da von dem Hotel dort aus alle fünf Minuten ein Golfwagen mit schwarzen Angestellten um die Insel fuhr, superfreaky, superbondstyle. Zum totlachen. Irgendwann wurden wir vom Strand vertrieben, weil die dort Tische fürs Hotel aufbauten
3.2. Ankern in den Tobago Cays. Hier passierte besagte Lobster Geschichte. Später ist uns immer wieder der Anker losgekommen und als es uns nach dem fünften Ankern zu blöd wurde, sind wir in der Nacht nochmal nach Mayreau getuckert.
4.2. Ein Strandtag
5.2. Wieder zurück nach Martinique, das dauert nun vier Tage. Erster Stop ist Canouan. Dort ist wenig Tourismus und wir flüchten vor eigenartigen alkoholisierten Jugendlichen in den abgezäunten "Moorings Club", wos lecker Cocktails und schöne Klos gibt.
6.2. St Vincent, Young Island Dock.
7.2. St Lucia, wir kamen spätabends an. Schon 1km vor der Küste erwartete uns der Bojenmann im Boot, der uns einen Bojenplatz verkaufen wollte, wir eh schon Ankerfaul sind glücklich. Aber es findet sich kein freier Platz, und erst in der Malgretoute Bay liegen wir an.
8.2. zuerst mal in Soufriere an Land gehen, Vulkantour. Dann in den Norden nach Rodney Bay. Dort ist übrigens der Pidgeon Island Park sehr zu empfehlen, wir hatten leider vergessen rechtzeitig dort zu sein. Ingrid und ich sind in Castries schon von Bord und haben uns dann über Land zur Rodney Bay durchgeschlagen, was dank öffentlicher Busse und riesiger Busbahnhöfe fast schon zu einfach war. Letzter Abend in einer Bucht, wir machen uns an die Alkoholreserven, die nicht kleinzukriegen waren.
9.2., wir laufen in Martinique ein. Vorher noch nett Baden am sehr empfehlenswerten Strand "Les Salines". Hier ist die Weltordnung wieder verkehrt. Während auf allen anderen Inseln nie ein Hellhäutiger Europäer zu sehen ist, sitzen hier hunderte Festland-Franzosen am Strand, die Schwarzen sind dann wieder im Hintergrund. Wir gewöhnen uns um.

Das wars dann auch schon, am letzten Tag haben wir noch ein paar Stunden in Fort de France verbracht und ausgeschifft. Schnief, jetzt sitz ich wieder im nassen und kalten Kaiserslautern und blogge. Während des Törns war meine Hauptbeschäftigung Biertrinken und checken, ob mit dem Boot alles passt, ist der Wind gut, können wir Kurs ändern, etc. Ich hab weder gelesen noch geschrieben, nicht geplant. Ingrid genoß das Sonnenbaden und die Ruhe, sie hörte Ken Follet's "Die Säulen der Erde" als Hörbuch. No worry, schön wars.

Was noch folgt ist die Route als GPS und ein Google-Maps mashup mit den Photos, dass wir so in etwa die photos mit den Geo-Koordinaten mixen, mal sehen wann das fertig ist.

Announcement: I will be on holiday, sailing in the Carribean, for the next two weeks. I will be back at around 13th February. Leo Sauermann will not answer your e-mails, phone calls or anything else, I will be offline.

We are sailing on a big catamaran, starting in Martinique and then, who knows where the wind brings us. Its ten people on a boat, and I think we will have a lot of things to do, like drinking beer and getting a sun tan.

I wondered alot about the flower that I saw this year at the burning man festival.

The flower itself has a strong emotional power, wherever it goes, it strikes your heart. Through the flicker group "the flower" I got contact to the do lab people, and asked them via mail a few more things about it, here is more information about the flower. This text is taken from an e-mail and mashed by me with a few links and pics:

About the flower: the major groups that worked on it are the do lab, and abundant sugar's Patrick Shearn was the one who originally had the concept. These are both Los angeles artist collectives.

After someone from Lexus saw the flower at burningman '05, the do lab was hired to bring it out to Chicago for a few days for them. The visit of the flowers to Chicago is documented on the do lab's homepage:

But the work of creating the flowers for the playa was, indeed, done by a lot of dedicated and inspired people from the Los Angeles burningman community (editor: as you can find on the flower tribe from LA on tribes.com). They have brought the flower(s) to burningman for two years, and by the second we were awarded a grant from BMOrg, to help cover some of the costs, but the first year's creation, and even a great deal of 2006 (as there was twice the work with two flowers) was donated, fundraised, and loaned by the people invovled in its creation, and from a lot of incredibly gracious members of the community who wanted to see this vision come to life on the playa.

This community brought it to burningman all in pieces, and put it together there. The whole process of setup and breakdown kept them in the desert for 17 days, and in terms of pre-production and prep work, is a project that's spread out over the whole year.

As a burner, I can only say: blessed be the flowers and the do lab.

Lehner's Wirtshaus in Hannover

Sonntag hatte ich noch eine Projektbesprechung in Hannover-Stadt. Zusammen mit unseren Projektpartnern sind wir, nach einer kurzen Odyssee durch verschiedene Lokale, endlich im richtigen gelandet: Lehner's Wirtshaus in Hannover. Sieht übrigens im IE besser aus als im Firefox.

Das war ein Glücksgriff für unser Meeting, darum gleich ordentlich bloggen.

Lehners ist ein Restaurant/Wirtshaus, hat Bayrische Küche und gutes Bier. Das herausragende ist die Musik, ruhiger chillout. Etwas des Ambientes bekommt man vielleicht auf diesem Video mit.

Wir hatten unser Meeting, es ging um nepomuk.semanticdesktop.org, danach bin ich noch geblieben und habe mit Markus Lembeck geredet, dem Chef vom Lehners. Es ist eine Franchise-Kette, es gibt mehrere in Deutschland, siehe homepage und die andere homepage bei enchilada.de.

Es ist in der Nähe von Kröpcke / Marktkirche, Anfahrtsplan gibts auch. Kann ich vom ganzen Herzen empfehlen, die erst vor ein paar Tagen so richtig eröffnet, sind aber meiner Ansicht nach ein Glücksgriff für geschäftliche Essen. Es waren auch einige CeBit Gäste dort.

Argentine: Photos and trip description

as previously blogged, Ingrid and me were in Argentina to get my cousin Robert married. (note: a wikipedia link is better than a tag, don't trust folksonomies)

We started on August 13th and came back Monday, August 29th in the afternoon, spending roughly two weeks (dos semanes) in Argentina. Our flight was with iberia and we can approva their service: everything worked, thanks. Only our damned VISA card from hell - the Postbank - failed us and we decided now to close our accounts at this bank: the credit card limit is ~800€ (cough cough, in Austria the word "limit" or "problem to extend it" was not really known). btw: Austria is known as the country where milk and honey flow, Argentina is the country where sugar flows (in all different forms).

Ok, so we reached Buenos Aires on Sunday, 14th August and we were open to everything. Before our travel, Ingrid and me had quite Angst what will happen in Argentine, we did not really know much of the country and we have never been to South-America before. Although we knew they had internet (through inkel) and we had a lot of travel guides, we didn't have time to read the travel guides beforehand and came to the country with open eyes and open mind. Luckily, we already met Georg, Mechtild, and Robert at Madrid and were not alone on our Journey, the three would accompany us the next days (and Robert until the end).

Robert also organized the trip from the Airport to town and the hotel, which relieved us from much hassle: thank you thank you thank you and bless you. Searching for a hotel in buenos aires would have left us in the situation hotel-envy of: but the others got a much nicer hotel. Other travellers had experienced hotel-envy. The taxi trip to Buenos Aires was very nice, we got an instant impression of culture (advertisments), nature (wow, trees we have never seen before) and people (there are joggers on the highway) of Argentina. Our taxi took the Av. 9 Julio to our hotel, which is the main street of Buenos Aires.

The rest of Sunday we visited some nice places of Buenos Aires, I don't want to list all here and we didn't upload all the photos anyhow.

Our first steak was on sunday noon:

On Monday we met Inkel and Daniel, as desribed before here. Before meeting them, we were in Tigre, a little town where people go on weekends. We took a boat trip there, which was nice the first hour but then got boring.

On Tuesday, we went shopping but didn't find much in the multitude of shops. We also saw the casa rosada and other important sight-seeing spots.

Tuesday evening, our bus to Santiago Del Estero departed, so we got to Retiro bus terminal in the evening and were astonished by the Argentine bus system. Ok, bus riding is very convenient, you can watch funny horror movies, drink mate or coffee and get something to eat. We used the lines "Del Norte" and "Fletcha" and both were good. (del norte was a little better in details).

In Santiago we spent our time from Wednesday until Monday, with the important wedding being at Saturday. The family where we lived were very nice, but we couldn't talk much with them, as we didn't speak spanish neither they spoke english. But it was ok, we had our Langenscheidt poket dicionary and using the global hand and feet language we came along and could learn much about each other. We did so many things in Santiago, I don't want to go into detail there. The main difference between Santiago and Buenos Aires is the size of town and the more rural culture, family centered, friendly, more music. Also, Santiago uses Siesta time, meaning that shops are open from 8-12am and 5 to 9pm. Schools the same, kids go to bed at about 2-3am.
We ate much dulce de lecce (another form of sugar, very sweet and nice, used like butter).

The wedding was great, the procedure similiar to european weddings. Similar to my own wedding: the bride came in a nice car, accompanied by her father, man waiting in the church, music while entering, catholic procedure (thats exactly the same as everywhere else), music, and joy. We were very happy to be there and to experience it, we also experienced some of the preperations and this was the most interesting part to learn about Argentina. The wedding continued with a banquet at a big club, where they had asada grill ready and local and international music. The couple opened the dancing by a waltz, very stylish, and then the party started. Local folk dances, all people dancing, much more vivid than in europe.
Ingrid and me had to go home at 5am due to tireness, the others (including grandparents and babies) stayed till 7am or so. Party people.

Sunday relaxing and having barbecue with friends, a very nice nice nice idea of Enzo, our host (he asked us: either grilling with friends of eating at home, but it was a kind of rhetorical question, thanks enzo, this was great).

Monday, we went with Lucky and Robert to see the northern provinces of Argentina, Salta and Jujuy. I will blog this tomorrow.
